Investigating the Academic Discourse within Educational Institutions: Special Focus on the Linguistic Features of Science and Technology Discourse in the University of El Oued

Following Algeria's recent policy shift mandating English for scientific dissemination, El Oued University researchers face significant hurdles. They now must navigate the complexities of English for Science and Technology (EST) while concurrently articulating intricate scientific data. This challenge is particularly acute in the pivotal Results and Discussion section. This multi-disciplinary study aims to explore the use of EST linguistic features by doctoral researchers in theses' Results and Discussion sections in scientific fields. It also seeks to identify the challenges they encounter when writing their theses in line with scientific English norms. This research adopts a mixed approach, utilizing a qualitative corpus analysis of doctoral theses' Results and Discussion sections and doctoral students' questionnaire. The findings reveal inconsistent mastery of EST features across scientific disciplines, with the corpus analysis identifying specific recurring difficulties in EST lexical, grammatical, and discourse characteristics. These challenges are subsequently confirmed by the students through the questionnaire data. This highlights the dual burden facing El Oued University researchers who must contend with complex scientific content in a non-native language. These research findings have crucial implications for teaching scientific English linguistic features as well as for the training and collaboration of content and language teachers
